Tempe This Week Dec. 8, 2025

A coalition from federal and local governments, including Mayor Corey Woods, Vice Mayor Doreen Garlid, U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton and the nonprofit community, spoke out about new guidance released by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development regarding homelessness funding.

Maricopa County stands to lose more than half of its federal homelessness funding - $32 million in federal assistance that currently supports 1,388 families, veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and individuals with disabilities. Right now, more than 1,000 seniors and 600 children depend on that funding.

Tempe residents have prioritized services for those who are homeless in the Community Survey for more than three years. In response, the City of Tempe has invested more than $140 million in housing and homelessness assistance since 2022, which has helped decrease homelessness in our community by 46%.

Later in the day the US Department of Housing and Urban Development withdrew its proposed guidelines.
