Department of Water hiring event will offer onsite interviews and offers
SYRACUSE, N.Y.-Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh announced two in-person hiring events to support city operations. The City will host a Department of Water hiring event on April 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Meachem Ice Rink at 121 W. Seneca Turnpike. The City will also host a job fair recruiting for positions in various departments on May 12 from 4-7pm at the Cecile Community Center at 174 W Seneca Turnpike.
"We know we have interest in opportunities at the City, but residents don't always know how their skills translate into a career in city government," said Mayor Ben Walsh. "Bringing these hiring events to community spaces allow candidates to have direct conversations with hiring managers and puts a career with the City in accessible reach."
The Department of Water is seeking a watershed inspector, water system construction engineers and several water maintenance workers. Some of these positions require a commercial driver's license and driving test. For the April 29 hiring event at Meachem Ice Rink, the department is expediting the hiring process by making job offers on the spot.
"We want candidates to know we are serious about removing barriers to good careers," said Commissioner Robert Brandt. "This is rewarding work and an opportunity to support major construction projects that improve the lives of our residents."
The May 12 job fair at Cecile Center will feature representatives from several departments across City government interested in meeting candidates with varying skills.
The City has hundreds of positions to fill, the majority being temporary summer staff in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Services. Parks and Recreation vacancies include lifeguards, recreation leaders, special events, park maintenance, and grounds workers.
"We have a lot of options here in Parks, especially with spring and summer positions. There are so many seasoned City employees in leadership who got their start here in Parks, it's a great way to begin a career in the trades or working with the public," said Syeisha Byrd Commissioner of Parks, Recreations and Youth Services.
For parents with youth interested in positions at Parks and Recreation, applicants must be at least 16 years old, have a work certificate and government-issued photo identification.
The City's Indeed.com account, which lists city employment opportunities, has more than 30 job titles with salaries ranging from $35,200 to $120,000 with more coming online. Open positions can be viewed at syr.gov/jobs. Residents must live in the city of Syracuse as a requirement of employment, some exceptions apply.
Candidates are encouraged to come prepared for immediate interviews and have several copies of their resumes on hand. Questions about the hiring event and job fair can be directed to personnel@syr.gov or by calling 315-448-8780.
