The 3rd Phase of the Housing Programme of the Ministry of National Defence has begun, through the tendering of projects with an overall budget exceeding 60 million euros.
The beginning of the new phase includes the construction of 181 housing units for the Armed Forces personnel and their families in Orestiada, Soufli, Alexandroupolis, Lesvos, Chios, Symi, Rhodes and Athens.
It bears reminding, that in the framework of carrying out the first two phases of the Housing Programme of the Ministry of National Defence, 462 housing units have been completed, and a further 801 are expected to be completed within the coming months.
It is worth mentioning, that a considerable portion of the funding of the 3rd Phase, equivalent to an amount exceeding 10 million euros, comes from the revenues of the newly formed National Defence Property Fund.
Insofar as care for retired servicemen is concerned, a Housing Complex of 24 apartments in Attica is under construction, while, for the Reserve Officer Candidates who will be serving special national service programmes, two student dormitory complexes of 48 apartments in total are under construction, in Athens and Thessaloniki.
Finally, the Ministry of National Defence is proceeding with the construction of 6 new Childcare Centres in Volos, Kalamata, Chania, Athens, and Thessaloniki, as well as the expansion of 5 existing ones in Alexandroupolis, Xanthi, Thessaloniki, Volos, and Samos in order to also be capable of providing for infants.
As the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias has pointed out, "the Housing Programme is not just words or promises, but a reality which has been measured, whose costs have been calculated and funded, and which is being executed on schedule, by people determined to carry the task through.For there to be combat-ready Armed Forces, their personnel must enjoy the quality of life they deserve, and which we are bound to guarantee".
