The visit to Spain, already the fourth since the full-scale war began, will further strengthen cooperation between the two countries. This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy following his meeting with Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez.
The Head of State noted that Spain was among the first European countries to allocate funds under the SAFE defense instrument in support of Ukraine.
"Today, we agreed on a list of products to be manufactured within SAFE. And we are working with European states, including Spain, to ensure that the SAFE instrument and corresponding funds are also used to finance production in Ukraine. We count on Spain's support in this," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The leaders also discussed the implementation of the PURL initiative, which enables Ukraine to purchase missiles for the Patriot systems that have no alternative at this point. Strengthening air defense remains an extremely important priority for Ukraine.
"We are actively working to establish strong European production of anti-ballistic systems, and I am confident we will achieve results in this regard. But this, sadly, takes time. The protection of lives cannot wait, and the Russians do not halt their strikes even as we intensify diplomatic efforts," Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
The President emphasized his strong belief in the potential of joint defense production between the countries. Ukraine is ready to share the knowledge and experience it has gained during this war, while Spain's defense industry is able to supply the shells, radars, and equipment we need.
"Today, there are new defense agreements between Ukraine and Spain, as well as our private sector and our companies. There is movement in economic and infrastructure cooperation between us, as the Prime Minister mentioned regarding the railway. These are important decisions. Humanitarian and diplomatic cooperation between our countries also continues," the Head of State noted.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Pedro Sánchez also discussed issues related to Ukraine's integration into the European Union and sanctions against Russia. They addressed the need to unblock the decision on the EUR 90 billion for Ukraine over two years. This is not only a financial matter but, above all, a question of justice, and it directly affects the real protection of Ukrainians' lives.
The President thanked the Prime Minister of Spain for his consistent stance in supporting Ukraine and expressed gratitude to all Spaniards for their attitude toward Ukrainians.
