Port of San Diego’s Celebrates the Region’s Maritime History and Bay of Life in May

The Port of San Diego is celebrating Maritime Month throughout May by honoring the thousands of people who work along the San Diego Bay waterfront and highlighting the positive impacts of the maritime industry within the community.

"Our region has a rich maritime history that continues today across our vibrant waterfront through cruise operations, cargo handling, commercial and sportfishing, shipbuilding, and more," said Chair Ann Moore, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "The Port is proud of our working waterfront and the important role it plays in our region's economy and everyday life. We invite the community to help celebrate the maritime industry with us in May."

Maritime Industry

In addition to cargo, Port Maritime is comprised of three other sectors - cruise, shipbuilding and repair, and commercial and sportfishing. Each sector is vital to the region's economy and provides thousands of high-paying jobs along the waterfront. The Port highlights the work and impact of these sectors during Maritime Month each year as an extension of National Maritime Day on May 22.

Port Maritime and partners across all sectors are also committed to critical environmental initiatives such as electrification and emissions reduction. During Maritime Month 2026, the Port is recognizing vessel operators who have participated in the Port's voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) Program by reducing their speed within 40 nautical miles of San Diego Bay.
