Defence Team,
The Military Police (MP) recognize that changes to how sexual offences are investigated within DND/CAF can have a direct and personal impact on those affected. Your safety, dignity, and access to support remain a priority for the MP.
Bill C-11 changes the authority of the MP to investigate criminal sexual offences that occur in Canada. Moving forward, all criminal sexual offence investigations that occur in Canada will now be conducted by civilian police.
Persons who come forward to the MP with new reports of criminal sexual offences or other offences of a sexual nature that fall within the scope of Bill C-11 will be referred to civilian police services. The MP will remain available to help guide and support individuals through this transition.
We understand that this change may feel uncertain or difficult, particularly for those who have experienced offences of a sexual nature. The MP are committed to supporting people affected by these offences with care, respect, and a trauma-informed approach. This includes ensuring that information is shared clearly, options are explained, and each individual is supported in making the choices that feel right for them.
For ongoing investigations, individuals will be contacted directly by the lead MP investigator or the MP Victim Services coordinator to discuss next steps. We will work with you to ensure you have the information and support you need, and that your case continues in a way that prioritizes your wellbeing and provides advocacy for your preferences during this process.
Support is available at any time. The MP Victim Services and the Defence Community Support and Resource Centre are here to provide confidential and professional assistance, help you understand your options, and support you throughout this process, whether you choose to proceed with a police investigation or not.
The MP are working closely with civilian police partners across Canada to promote a coordinated and sensitive approach during this transition, with a continued focus on the needs and experiences of those affected.
Our goal is to maintain your trust by ensuring that this transition is carried out with care, transparency, and unwavering support.
