HARRISBURG - As the U.S. celebrates its 250th anniversary, Sen. Elder Vogel, Jr. (R-47) and Sen. Judy Schwank (D-11) joined their colleagues and state dairy leaders to honor 250 years of dedication from Pennsylvania's dairy industry during this year's National Dairy Month celebration.
"With much to be proud of as a commonwealth and as a nation, I wanted this year's dairy month celebration to focus on how our dairy industry has evolved over the last 250 years," said Vogel. "Not only have we made incredible strides in both milk production and efficiency, but we've also grown more sustainable, which will ensure future generations enjoy our rich agricultural heritage for years to come."
"Pennsylvania's dairy industry has endured for centuries and will remain a major driver of our agricultural sector for years to come," said Schwank. "Dairy Month is a time to recognize the importance of our dairy farmers and the products they produce that are a part of our daily routines. As we mark 250 years of Pennsylvania dairy, let's extend our thanks to the hardworking families who have carried on this proud tradition and help feed our communities."
Vogel and Schwank remain strong agricultural stewards both in their districts and in Harrisburg, where they serve as the chairs of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee.
Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding, who was among the state leaders joining today's celebration, shared his appreciation for the generations of dairy farmers stating, "We're proud to recognize generations of Pennsylvania dairy farmers who remain at the heart of our country's agricultural heritage and continue to play a vital role in producing wholesome food, supporting local communities and strengthening our economy."
As a final touch to the gathering, the Pennsylvania Dairymen's Association promoted the commonwealth's top-performing industry by sharing their famous milkshakes.
Dave Smith, executive director for the Dairymen's Association, was also honored by Vogel and Schwank for his years of dedication to being an advocate for Pennsylvania dairy farmers as he will soon be retiring.
"As a farmer, Dave embodies the selfless sacrifice that comes with the profession and has gone above and beyond by serving the Dairymen's Association and taking it to new heights during his tenure as executive director," said Vogel "Dave will be sorely missed here in Harrisburg, but I know he looks forward to spending his retirement with his family and grandkids and tending the family farm."
