EU Looks to Further Delay Deforestation Regulation

The European Commission has begun the process to again delay implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation. USMEF Vice President of Economic Analysis Erin Borror says that is good news as the U.S. and several EU countries seek to simplify the regulation for nations that carry little to no deforestation risk.

The regulation, which would require importers of beef and other goods to show their products are not linked to deforestation, was delayed for a year at the end of 2024 as EU systems for implementation were not in place. While deforestation is not a concern for U.S. beef, the regulation, as it currently stands, would place a significant documentation burden on U.S. producers.

A delay would have to be approved by the European Parliament.
