Mesa invites residents to take an active role in shaping their community by serving on the City's volunteer advisory boards and committees.
These boards provide an opportunity for residents to share their knowledge, expertise and experience to help inform City leadership and City Council decisions on a wide range of policies, programs and services that impact Mesa's quality of life.
Recruitment for advisory boards and committees is ongoing. Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Appointments are recommended by the Mayor and approved by the City Council.
Current openings are listed below. Unless otherwise noted, the term of service is three years. For more information about boards and committees and to apply, go to mesaaz.gov/boards.
The Board of Adjustment conducts public hearings to hear and decide upon requests for variances, special use permits and interpretations of the City of Mesa Ordinance and Sign Code.
Currently seeking applicants for:
•Community Representatives (3)
The Building Board of Appeals hears appeals to determinations made by the Building Safety Director and/or the Fire Marshal, decides on reasonable interpretations of the Building Regulations and Chapter 2 of the Fire Regulations, determines the suitability of alternate materials and alternate methods of construction and recommends changes to the various building and fire codes.

The Design Review Board reviews buildings of four or more stories in height; any multiple residential projects that exceed the RM-2 density range; commercial and industrial projects that have frontage on an arterial street, or that are part of an existing or planned development that has frontage on an arterial street; and any commercial and industrial projects which have, or will have, greater than twenty thousand (20,000) square feet of gross floor area. The Board also reviews parking garages and City of Mesa municipal projects.

The Economic Development Advisory Board acts as the advisory board to the City Council on matters pertaining to economic development, including goal setting, strategic planning, marketing and business recruitment, retention and expansion.

The Historic Preservation Board (HPB) makes recommendations to the Downtown Development Committee, the Planning and Zoning Board, the Board of Adjustments, the Zoning Administrator and City Council. The HPB also makes recommendations to the City Council regarding public policy development for the preservation of historic resources throughout the City.

The Housing and Community Development Advisory Board advises the City Council about housing, community development, social services priorities, funding and planning across the community.

The Museum and Cultural Advisory Board (MCAB) advises the City Council on policies related to arts and cultural facilities and services and on policies related to public art. The MCAB also makes recommendations on fees and charges and advocates on behalf of arts and culture.

The Parks and Recreation Board provides recommendations to the City Council regarding the operation and development of all City parks and recreational facilities and programming.

The Personnel Appeals Board makes recommendations to the City Manager concerning action on employee grievances, demotions, suspensions and dismissals that are referred to the Board for an opinion.

The Planning and Zoning Board conducts hearings and makes recommendations to the City Council on requests for changes in zoning and on required site plans. They also consider and recommend changes in the City's long range plans and in the Municipal Code concerning planning and zoning matters.

The Transportation Advisory Board makes recommendations concerning traffic and transportation matters to the City Council.
