Nighttime lane closures planned on Ironworkers Memorial Bridge for deck repairs

VANCOUVER - Drivers travelling on Highway 1 are advised to expect delays of as much as 20 minutes as nighttime closures are planned on the Ironworkers Memorial Second Narrows Crossing, starting Sunday, March 8, 2026.

Nighttime closures are expected from March 8 through to March 17. During the work, Highway 1 eastbound will be closed completely and traffic will flow one lane in each direction on the westbound side. The closures are necessary to allow the Ministry of Transportation and Transit's maintenance contractor to complete deck and joint repairs on the bridge.

Lane closures are anticipated to take place at the following times:

  • Sunday, March 8 - lane closures from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.
  • Monday, March 9 - lane closures from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
  • Tuesday, March 10 to Tuesday, March 17 - lane closures from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

As this work is weather dependent, timelines may shift as needed. Drivers travelling through the area can access an alternative route via the Lions Gate Bridge. A steel plate will remain in place each day to protect work in progress. Median guardrails will be replaced with traffic barrels and impact attenuators throughout the day.

The eastbound sidewalk will remain open. Cyclists and pedestrians are encouraged to adjust their routes to avoid the construction work zone. While general commercial traffic (three metres or less) can continue to access the bridge, oversized loads will require special permits to cross.

Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic signage and traffic-control personnel in the area and adjust speeds as posted through the construction zone. Drivers should plan additional travel time through the route during the closure schedule and expect delays around the start time each night.
