The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced today that it has streamlined and simplified the way it provides public access to a range of data that it generates and collects.
ICANN introduced the Open Data Platform (ODP) in 2020 at the request of the community, with the goal of increasing transparency and access to publicly available data relevant to ICANN's mission. However, the ODP used a separately hosted website and required users to log in to access the data.
Going forward, ICANN has opted to migrate the available data to a dedicated page on the main ICANN website. As a result, anyone is able to view and download the documents or datasets, including data on the number and type of registered domains, without needing to log in. The data is available as CSV files, which are a universally supported file format that do not require the use of an API.
This updated approach to providing data access also will reduce the ICANN organization's maintenance, data storage, and data backup needs, allowing resources to be directed elsewhere.
The current version of the Open Data Platform will continue to be available through the end of August 2026. This period of overlap will give users the chance to explore the new webpage and update their processes as needed.
