EFTA Council meets for fourth time in 2025

On 10 June, the EFTA Council held its fourth meeting of 2025 in Geneva.

Regarding EFTA-EU relations, the EFTA Secretariat briefed the Council on the recent EEA Council meeting held on 21 May, which included the signing, on the margins of the meeting, of a joint statement on strengthening EEA foreign and security policy cooperation. The Council was also briefed on the recent visit by the EEA Joint Parliamentary Committee to Akureyri, Iceland, from 26 to 28 May. Furthermore, Member States heard about recent political developments in the EU, specifically the Single Market Strategy and the fourth Omnibus package, which forms part of the EU's broader simplification agenda.

On trade relations, Member States exchanged views on recent developments in the processes with MERCOSUR, Singapore and Vietnam. The Secretariat also briefed the Council on preparations for the upcoming signing of the Economic Partnership Agreement with Malaysia.

Finally, Member States discussed ongoing preparations for the EFTA Ministerial to be held on 23 and 24 June in Tromsø, Norway, and reported on recent policy developments, including meetings held on the margins of the OECD Ministerial meeting on 3 and 4 June.

The next EFTA Council meeting is scheduled for 17 September.
