Arrington Doubles Down on Sanctioning ICC, Support of Israel

Washington, D.C. - Today, House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington (TX-19) issued the following statement after House passage of H.R.23, the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, legislation to require the President to impose sanctions against International Criminal Court (ICC) officials who investigate, arrest, detain, or prosecute a U.S. person or allies, including Israel:

"The International Criminal Court lacks any formal jurisdiction to infringe on the sovereign authority of any democratic country or its people," said Chairman Arrington. "Last year, I was proud to lead an effort to sanction the ICC for issuing phony warrants for Israeli public officials, and I will continue to expose these bogus sanctions and stand up for Israel's inherent right of self-defense."

Background:

  • In the previous Congress, Arrington voted in favor of identical legislation that was also passed by the House but did not advance in the Democrat controlled Senate.
  • In May 2024, Arrington led his colleagues in slamming the ICC's reported decision to issue arrest warrants against Israel's Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and the Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces.
    • In the letter, Arrington urged the Biden administration to impose sanctions on ICC officials, similar to the June 11, 2020 sanctions that blocked property of certain persons associated with the court.
