The City held a dedication ceremony on October 6, 2026, to honor former City Council Member Henry F. Marraffa, Jr. by officially renaming the Griffith Park Pavilion in his memory. Mayor Jud Ashman, current and former City Council members, City staff, local leaders, and members of the Marraffa family gathered to celebrate his decades of service and lasting impact on the Gaithersburg community.
"When I think of Henry, I think of his legacy of kindness, commitment, and dedication to Gaithersburg's future," said Mayor Jud Ashman. "We are fortunate to have had such a devoted public servant, and we are deeply grateful for Henry's passion, innovation, and unwavering commitment to our community."
For more than two decades, Henry devoted himself to the Gaithersburg community, serving on the Board of Appeals, Planning Commission, and nearly 10 years on the City Council. His reputation for excellence was recognized on the national level, representing the City on the Board of Directors of both the Maryland Municipal League and the National League of Cities.
A passionate advocate for economic development, Henry was an early and consistent supporter of the City's evolution into a mixed-use, life-sciences hub and championed policies that supported local businesses large and small. Communities such as Kentlands, Lakelands, Parklands, and Crown flourished during Henry's tenure, reflecting his commitment to thoughtful, mixed-use development that strengthened Gaithersburg's vibrancy and growth. His service on the Economic Development and Olde Towne Advisory Committees reflected both his commitment to economic vitality and his deep respect for Gaithersburg's history and character.
