NORWICH, CT - Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02), Ranking Member of the House Seapower and Projection Forces Subcommittee, released the following statement:
"A War Powers Resolution to end President Trump's war in Iran has the bipartisan votes to pass today, but Speaker Johnson is keeping the House out of session to block a vote," Courtney said. "The Trump Administration has never articulated clear goals or strategies for this war, or what 'imminent threats' led to the choice to go to war on February 28th. 13 servicemembers have been killed, hundreds of servicemembers have been injured, hundreds of innocent civilians, the victims of Iran's brutal regime, have been killed, and the energy crisis caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to drive up costs for Americans at home. I cosponsored and voted to pass a War Powers Resolution to stop the President's unauthorized use of force in Iran. As President Trump continues his unhinged threats amid a shaky ceasefire agreement, Congress cannot wait any longer to act."
On March 5th, Courtney voted to pass H.Con.Res. 38 to end President Trump's war in Iran. The resolution narrowly failed to pass the House by a vote of 212-219.
Today, April 9th, in a Pro Forma session, the House Majority blocked consideration of H.Con.Res. 40, another War Powers Resolution to end President Trump's unilateral war in Iran. Courtney is a cosponsor of H.Con.Res. 40. Next week, the House is scheduled to return to session on April 14th, and a vote is expected to be forced by H.Con.Res 40's supporters under a privileged motion.
