Governor Gianforte Launches Fifth Annual Youth Hunting Story Contest

HELENA, Mont. - Governor Greg Gianforte today announced the opening of the fifth annual Governor's Youth Hunting Story Contest, inviting Montana youth and apprentice hunters ages 10 to 17 to share their hunting adventures from across the Treasure State.

"For five years, this contest has celebrated young Montanans who are getting outdoors, making memories with family and friends, and carrying on our proud hunting heritage," Gov. Gianforte said. "Some of my favorite stories each year come from our young hunters, and I can't wait to see what adventures they share with us this season."

Since launching the contest five years ago, the governor has recognized young hunters from communities across Montana for stories capturing memorable first hunts, time spent with family and mentors, lessons learned in the field, and the traditions that make hunting an important part of Montana's way of life.

To enter the contest, hunters must submit a story of no more than 500 words and a photo from their hunt. Participants must be Montana residents and licensed hunters or apprentice hunters between the ages of 10 and 17. Eligible entries include the harvest of any legal game, furbearer, or bird in Montana.

The governor will select 10 winners, five in the 10 to 13 age group and five in the 14 to 17 age group. Winners will be invited to the State Capitol in January to receive prizes and celebrate their hunting stories with the governor.

Helping make the fifth annual contest special, 2026 prize partners include Sitka, Stone Glacier, Kenetrek Boots, J2 Taxidermy, Daniel Defense, Leupold, Vortex, Crazy Creek, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Murdoch's, the Montana Outfitters & Guides Association, and Zink's Big Sky Archery Targets.
