Chancellor Buckley Honored to Join Alliance of Academic Health Centers International Steering Committee

Peter Buckley, MD, chancellor of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has been appointed to the steering committee of the Alliance of Academic Health Centers International (AAHCI). AAHCI is a global network of academic health centers and systems with a mission to advance health, education, and research through collaboration.

Chancellor Buckley, a psychiatrist who emigrated from Ireland in 1992 and became a U.S. citizen six years later, also serves as the chair of the Board of Directors at Intealth. A leading organization in physician workforce in the U.S. and worldwide, Intealth oversees the verification and visa sponsorship for international doctors - International Medical Graduates (IMGs) - who seek to train as resident physicians or practice as physicians in the U.S. IMGs comprise 23% of the U.S. physician workforce.

As an AAHCI steering committee member, Chancellor Buckley will provide guidance to shape the direction of AAHCI as it continues to grow as the premier international organization of academic health centers. The committee is comprised of leaders of institutions in several countries including Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Lebanon, the Philippines, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

AAHCI is a component of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which includes 170 accredited U.S. and Canadian medical schools, more than 400 teaching hospitals and health systems, and more than 70 faculty and academic societies. Chancellor Buckley has longstanding leadership affiliations with AAMC, including previously serving on its Board of Directors and as chair of its Council of Deans. For his exemplary service to the organization and to academic medicine, AAMC honored Dr. Buckley in 2022 with a distinguished service award.

In addition to these international and national leadership roles, Chancellor Buckley serves alongside other Memphis leaders as a board member for Memphis Tomorrow, the Memphis Medical District Collaborative, and the Memphis Chamber of Commerce.

Since joining UT Health Science Center in 2022, Chancellor Buckley and a new executive leadership team have spearheaded UT Health Science Center's growing momentum and enhanced its presence in Memphis and across Tennessee. Key activities include developing and implementing the 2023-2028 Strategic Plan and the new vision - Healthy Tennesseans. Thriving Communities. - to define the university's direction as it strives to improve the health of the entire state.

Additionally, UT Health Science Center recently earned the prestigious R1 designation from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, signifying the highest level of research activity. This status highlights the university's commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation to develop cures for the diseases affecting the people of Tennessee and beyond.

Over the last three years, many new leaders have joined to advance this momentum, including new deans for the colleges of Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Medicine; new deans for each regional campus of the College of Medicine in Nashville, Knoxville, and Chattanooga; new vice chancellors for Finance and Administration, Advancement, Strategic Partnerships, Research, and Strategic Communications and Marketing; and a first-ever Chief Wellness Officer. This stellar new leadership team is well positioned to guide Tennessee's academic health science institution into the future as the state's leading educator of health care professionals, a vital contributor to clinical care, and a significant hub for scientific research.
