Alpine County - The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will be re-opening State Route 89 (Monitor Pass) at the State Route 4/89 Junction, as of 2:00 p.m., on Thursday, April 2, 2026. Our Caltrans Woodfords maintenance crew made swift progress clearing the roadway of ice and snow from this past weather event along Monitor Pass and have deemed it safe for reopening to motorists.
For the latest road condition information, tune your radio to the Caltrans Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) at 530 AM, 1610 AM or 1670 AM, or call the Caltrans Road Condition Hotline at 1-800-427-ROAD (7623). Changeable Message Signs (CMS) will display information regarding the pass closures for motorists.
Caltrans urges motorists not to pass snow removal equipment on the highway, use caution, and watch for icy road surfaces in the overnight and early morning hours. For helpful information on winter driving conditions visit dot.ca.gov/travel/winter-driving-tips.
Motorists should expect 5-to-10-minute delays and use alternate routes whenever possible. All work is scheduled to occur as listed but is subject to change due to traffic incidents, weather, availability of equipment/materials, and construction-related issues.
For the safety of workers and other motorists, please Be Work Zone Alert. Caltrans also reminds motorists to #KnowBeforeYouGo by checking QuickMaps on your mobile device or visit quickmap.dot.ca.gov for real-time highway conditions.
