Today, the remains of 42 Poles murdered by Ukrainian nationalists from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army were reburied in a solemn ceremony in Puźniki (Puzhnyky) in Ukraine. It was a long-awaited moment for the families of the murdered, who wished to bury their ancestors with dignity.
The funeral ceremony was attended by the representatives of Polish and Ukrainian authorities. It was possible to pay due respect and commemorate the murder victims as owing to diplomatic efforts and openness shown by the two countries. We would like to stress the importance of the today's event for the process of reconciliation and cultivation of friendship between our nations.
The remains were exhumed as part of works started in April 2025 by the Freedom and Democracy Foundation. The resumption of the exhumations, halted by the Ukrainian side in 2017, was possible following an agreement reached in Warsaw by Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
We hope that the process will go on uninterrupted, so that all victims and their families can find out the truth and find peace.
