Ahead of Open Enrollment, Voters Call out Republicans for Raising Health Care Costs

Ahead of open enrollment, voters across the country are calling out Republicans for refusing to address rising health care costs and warning about the devastating effects for working families if they allow ACA premiums to skyrocket.

In key battleground states like Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada, where there will be competitive races for governors in 2026, Republicans are feeling the heat for refusing to work across the aisle to stop premiums from doubling or even tripling for millions of Americans in 2026.

  • Macomb County resident Jill Murphy is among the nearly half a million Michiganders whose health care coverage is made more affordable through federal subsidies in the form of enhanced premium tax credits, which lower the costs of premiums for people who purchase their insurance through an Affordable Care Act marketplace.
  • The coverage is essential for Murphy, who requires treatments for endometriosis, a chronic condition that can cause severe pelvic pain and infertility, as well as for other conditions.
  • But with the start of the ACA open enrollment period approaching on Nov. 1, Murphy and others who rely on the enhanced tax credits to lower costs could find themselves in a dire financial situation if Republicans in Congress don't act to extend them.

  • Demonstrators say when Affordable Care Act tax credits expire…premiums will rise for families already struggling to afford rent, groceries, and gasoline.
