Is Carnival Stock A Real Bargain

Carnival (CCL) stock trades at 11.5 times earnings, roughly half the 21.9 for the S&P 500. Shares have lost 5.4% over the past twelve months, compared with a 17.3% return for the broader index. This leaves investors with two possible readings: a profitable cruise operator on sale, or an accurate valuation for a business with its best growth behind it. So what does a buyer get at that price?

What Does Carnival's Low Price Buy You?

The current valuation buys a cruise operator generating significant profits. Over the last twelve months, Carnival earned $3.1 billion in net income. The company recorded an 11.4% net margin during that period, an increase from 10.1% a year earlier. This shows that Carnival's profit is growing, not shrinking.

North America accounts for most of this business, generating $17.6 billion of revenue in fiscal 2025 against $8.5 billion from Europe. These earnings also translate directly into cash. Carnival's free cash flow currently equals 8.8% of its market value. At the same time, customers continue to pay in advance. Customer deposits hit about $7.6 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, setting a record for a third quarter.

Carnival's Growth Has Slowed Every Year

Revenue expansion has cooled over the past year. Carnival posted 5.2% revenue growth over the last twelve months, falling short of its 11.5% annual average over three years. The pace has dropped every year, stepping down from a 22% increase two years ago to a 7.1% gain a year ago.

Despite this slowdown, Carnival has maintained an operating margin above its longer record. The margin reached 16.0% over the last twelve months, compared with a three-year average of 15.4%. The gap between the past year and the longer record therefore exists in growth, not in profitability.

The company is also barely adding capacity. Management forecasts a capacity increase of 0.5% for 2027, meaning additional revenue must come from higher prices and fuller ships. Yet new capacity from competitors is adding pressure in the Caribbean. Carnival confronts this pressure carrying debt equal to 69.7% of its market value, against 21% for the S&P 500.

Can Carnival Earn More Without Adding Much Capacity?

Management is attempting to raise earnings through higher prices and tighter costs. Executives noted that 2027 is already half booked, pointing to record levels for both occupancy and pricing. The company also reported that operational improvements worth more than $150 million since June fully offset the higher fuel prices it now expects.

The immediate hurdle is the target management set for itself: adjusted earnings of $2.24 a share for full-year 2026, a forecast raised from $2.22. In the meantime, Carnival is returning cash to shareholders. The company has repurchased nearly $1.2 billion of stock in six months, representing about 3% of its market value.

Buying shares at this level essentially represents a bet that Carnival can continue increasing prices on capacity that is barely growing. Revenue grew 3.5% in fiscal Q3 2026, trailing the 5.2% pace seen over the last twelve months. The next earnings report will clarify whether growth holds there or slips further. Investors will also watch for management's earnings guidance for 2027, a forecast the company has not yet provided.

Now you know CCL better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.

There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
