VF Corporation, Timberland and Bunka Fashion College to Bring Emerging Designers’ Ideas to the Global Stage

VF Corporation, together with its global design hub, the Tokyo Design Collective (TDC), and Timberland®, has successfully concluded its emerging designer development program with Bunka Fashion College (BFC), one of Japan's leading fashion institutions. The five-month collaboration brought together industry professionals and emerging creative talent to explore the future of design, culture and innovation under the theme "CRAFT MEETS INNOVATION: Form, Function, and Process." The initiative also reflects TDC's ambition to connect ideas developed in Tokyo with VF's global design network, creating opportunities for those ideas to reach a broader creative community.

The program concluded with the presentation of five concept projects developed by senior-year students from Bunka Fashion College's Apparel Design Department. Exploring topics ranging from craftsmanship and cultural identity to future lifestyles and creative expression, the projects offered five distinct interpretations of how fashion and product design can respond to a changing cultural landscape.

As a tangible outcome of the collaboration, all five student concepts will be showcased during Timberland's 2028 Fall/Winter Creative Kick Off later this year at the brand's headquarters in Stratham, New Hampshire. Bringing the work from Tokyo to this global forum gives the students' ideas a life beyond the program and introduces new thinking into Timberland's creative dialogue.

Aki Tanabe, Director of Product Design Platform (Japan), VF Corporation, said: "At VF, great design grows through the exchange of different perspectives. This collaboration allows us to engage emerging creative talent early in their development while strengthening the connection between creative education and industry." That exchange of perspectives was also reflected in the students' creative interpretations of Timberland's iconic product. Mirian Lamberth, Senior Director, Creative Direction, Timberland, added: "What stood out to me was how differently students interpreted the same iconic Timberland product. Starting from one shared canvas, they created something entirely of their own, bringing their individual personalities and creativity to life. These fresh perspectives challenge us to consider new possibilities as Timberland continues to evolve for future generations."

The collaboration also delivered significant value from an educational perspective. Faculty Team, Department of Apparel Design, Bunka Fashion College, shared: "The collaboration gave students the opportunity to develop their own point of view while engaging with professionals from a global brand environment. It encouraged them to explore, question and experiment, while understanding how creative thinking can connect with real-world design challenges."

The success of this inaugural program has established a strong foundation for continued collaboration between VF, Timberland and Bunka Fashion College, demonstrating how education and industry can come together to nurture emerging talent and create space for new thinking. Building on that foundation, VF, Timberland and Bunka Fashion College will continue exploring opportunities to strengthen the connection between creative education and fashion practice and give emerging talent greater exposure to the wider world of design.
