On Oct. 23, The University of New Mexico College of Education & Human Sciences (COEHS) hosts its annual Lobos @ APS Day, an immersive event designed to deepen partnerships between the college and Albuquerque Public Schools (APS)
The initiative will connect UNM faculty, staff, and administrators with APS classrooms, educators, and support teams across the district. By shadowing and engaging with teachers, administrators, counselors, athletic trainers, nutrition staff, and other education professionals, participants will gain firsthand insight into the daily experiences, challenges, and opportunities within Albuquerque's public schools.
"APS is not only New Mexico's largest school district, it's also where many of our graduates go on to teach, lead, and serve," said Kristopher Goodrich, dean of the College of Education & Human Sciences. "Lobos @ APS Day gives our faculty and staff the opportunity to step inside classrooms and schools, learn from our partners, and strengthen the connections that guide our mission: preparing educators who serve New Mexico communities."
Participants are encouraged to visit APS sites on Oct. 23, though alternative arrangements can be made for those unable to attend that day. Partner visits will include opportunities to observe instruction, meet with school leaders, and explore the critical role that community partnerships play in student success.
By engaging directly with APS, COEHS aims to enhance its teacher preparation programs, expand support for student teachers, and better align with the needs of New Mexico's educational workforce.
To conclude their day of shadowing, all UNM and APS participants will gather at the Berna Facio Professional Development Center for a reception and reflection on what they learned during the day. Ideally these discussions will continue in UNM programs and departments for program-specific reflections and impact.
