Watch: ZZ Top Plays First Show Since Death Of 'Dear Drummer' Frank Beard

ZZ Top returned to the stage Saturday (Aug. 22) at Austin, Texas' ACL Live at the Moody Theater, just days after the death of longtime drummer Frank Beard.

While the band didn't formally address Beard's passing during the concert, singer and guitarist Billy Gibbons paid tribute to his longtime bandmate while introducing drummer Michael Monahan, who is stepping in for Beard.

"I guess some of you probably know there's a new man in town," Gibbons told the crowd, per Loudwire.

Gibbons recalled a conversation with Beard, who had reportedly told him his "bass drum foot's a little weak" and asked whether Monahan could take over. Beard then joked, "Yeah, that's what worries me."

Rather than turning the night into a somber memorial, Gibbons encouraged fans to celebrate.

"We're all here for a celebration," he said to applause. "So y'all have a good time!"

Last week, the legendary rock band announced on their official website that they would continue touring in honor of Beard.

Beard died in hospice care on Aug. 17. He had stepped away from touring earlier this summer, with Monahan filling in for him.
