Raleigh Makes Moves for Accessible and Affordable Housing

Raleigh City Council recently approved two projects to bring more accessible and affordable housing to the City.

Affordable Apartments on Kent Road

On September 19, 2023, City Council authorized up to $6 million for the purchase of land on Kent Road with the intention of leasing the land to Blue Ridge Atlantic (also called BRAD Parkside Apartments LLC) for the development of 144-affordable housing units. The City will maintain ownership of the land, leasing it to the developer for up to 85 years for $10 a year. This will ensure that the units remain affordable for the generations to come.

On November 6, Council gave the final authorization needed in order to move forward with this project.

Affordable Housing Near a Future Bus Line

The City Council is also working to add affordable housing near a planned bus line called the Western Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. Since 2021, the City has looked for land close to this route. On Aug. 26, the City agreed to buy two properties on Hillsborough Street for $2.55 million. This purchase will be paid for by the 2020 Affordable Housing Bond. The City expects to complete the land purchase by December.

Creating housing with access to public transportation is a crucial piece of the affordable housing puzzle.
