Public Health Madison & Dane County is issuing a public health alert due to an increase, or spike, in drug overdoses in our community that may be fueled by extreme heat.
This alert is based on data from hospitals and EMS providers. On June 29 and 30, first responders reported at least seven suspected opiate involved overdoses and several other related incidents. This is more overdoses than we usually see in our community.
Research shows that extreme heat can increase the risk of drug overdoses and overdose deaths. Opioids and stimulants can make it harder for your body to regulate temperature, increasing the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and other heart-related complications. Mixing drugs with alcohol can further increase these risks.
"There are steps you can take to protect yourself including using less or going slow, using a buddy system, not using in a parked car, and always carrying naloxone in case of an overdose," said Public Health Supervisor Julia Olsen. "Remember to stay cool and hydrated and call 211 if you need help finding a place to cool off."
First responders, healthcare providers, and people who use drugs and their families should be aware of these increased risks. Sign up to get email or text alerts about overdose spikes on Public Health's webpage.
