Rosen Introduces Amendment to Stop Trump from Spending Tax Dollars on Self-Promoting Ads

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV) introduced an amendment to her No Self-Promotion with Public Dollars Act - which would prohibit members of the President's Cabinet and high-level political appointees from using taxpayer dollars to run self-promoting ad campaigns - to now also prohibit the President and Vice President from doing so. This amendment comes in response to Donald Trump's recent use of taxpayer dollars for a national advertisement indistinguishable from a campaign commercial despite an existing federal law banning the use of federal funds for "publicity or propaganda purposes."

Senator Rosen introduced the No Self-Promotion with Public Dollars Act earlier this year following former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem's admission that she used $220 million in taxpayer dollars for an advertising campaign in which she was prominently featured. The contracts for these ads were awarded to firms with close personal and political ties to the Administration, and Senator Rosen's legislation would also ban the hiring of consulting and advertising firms with ties to high-ranking officials.

"Donald Trump cut funding for health care, food assistance, and countless other programs Nevada families rely on, while at the same time burning through taxpayer dollars on campaign ads featuring himself," said Senator Rosen. "Nevadans are sick and tired of this crap. That's why I introduced an amendment to expand my bill banning self-promoting ads to include the President and Vice President because I'm fed up with their total wasteful spending of Nevadans' hard-earned dollars while doing nothing to help families."

Senator Rosen has been a vocal defender of taxpayer dollars against waste, fraud, and abuse. Her bipartisan No CORRUPTION Act, which closed a loophole that allowed former members of Congress to continue receiving taxpayer-funded pensions after being convicted of felonies, was signed into law. Last Congress, Senator Rosen also supported the Government Spending Oversight Act to help reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending. Earlier that year, she announced that the bipartisan Billion Dollar Boondoggle Act she joined to increase transparency in government projects that are delayed or over budget passed the Senate.
