Commissioner Kos visits Copenhagen to promote EU enlargement

This week, from 29 August to 2 September 2025,Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos will travel to Copenhagen to reinforce the political momentum for EU enlargement.

On 29 August, the Commissioner will take part in the StartTrygFonden Copenhagen Swim. She will attend the opening event and participate in the 2 000-metre rolling-start race. On this occasion, she highlights the transformative power of sport and its similarities with the EU's Enlargement process:

"As a former professional swimmer, I know firsthand the power of sport to unite people. The EU Enlargement process is similar: it demands dedication, a commitment to shared rules, and teamwork. By working together and welcoming new members to our team, we'll not only strengthen the European Union, but our entire continent."

On 30 August, Marta Kos will participate in the informal Foreign Affairs Council (Gymnich). She will participate in discussions including on Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia through sanctions and countering the shadow fleet and on Russian assets. In addition, she will also participate in a working lunch on the situation in the Middle East and join discussions on the Foreign Affairs Council's working methods.

Finally, on 2 September, the Commissioner will attend the informal General Affairs Council meeting to take part in a discussion on EU enlargement, presenting the results of the latest Special Eurobarometer on Enlargement as well as the perception surveys conducted in candidate countries and potential candidates in the presence of ministers from candidate and potential candidate countries. On the margins, Commissioner Kos will have a bilateral meeting with Benjamin Haddad, France's Minister Delegate for European Affairs.
