In the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at Mission Regional Medical Center, precision, preparation, and teamwork come together in some of healthcare's most critical moments. For Patricia Alvarado, a Cath Lab technologist with nearly nine years of experience, the fast-paced environment is exactly what drew her to the specialty.
"What drew me to the Cardio Cath Lab was the adrenaline and the impact we have on patients," Alvarado said. "I love the idea of being able to save someone's life."
Preparation Saves Time and Lives
Each day in the Cath Lab begins with thorough preparation. From equipment checks to patient readiness, every step contributes to procedural safety and efficiency.
"We start by prepping the lab, making sure we have everything ready, checking equipment, reviewing patient history, and ensuring the patient is comfortable and prepared for the procedure," she said. That level of readiness is especially vital in emergency situations, such as STEMI heart attacks, when rapid intervention directly affects outcomes.
Alvarado said she is most proud of "the moments where experience, teamwork, and calm under pressure come together for the patient." One experience that stands out is seeing recovery firsthand. "Seeing a patient the next day after having an ER STEMI and them thanking me for helping them," she said.
Teamwork at the Core
In the Cath Lab, collaboration is not optional, it is essential. "Teamwork in the Cath Lab is everything," Alvarado noted. "It is a highly coordinated environment where everyone knows their role." She describes the team culture as one built on trust and camaraderie. "I work with people who truly know what they are doing, and we have each other's backs. We are one big family."
The hospital's culture supports that environment by emphasizing preparedness and continued learning. "The culture emphasizes training, readiness, and accountability. We are encouraged to stay current with protocols," she said.
Leadership has also played a role in her professional development. According to Alvarado, she has been encouraged to take on more responsibility, participate in complex cases, and expand her knowledge through vendor education, in-services, and hands-on experience with new devices.
Driven by Purpose
For Alvarado, the motivation to continue in such a demanding field comes down to impact.
"Knowing the impact we have on patients' lives," she said. "It makes me proud to help patients in their most vulnerable moments."
For students considering a career in the Cath Lab, her advice is practical: "Be ready for a fast-paced environment and focus on learning the fundamentals." She believes one quality stands out above the rest: Calm under pressure.
She describes working in the Cath Lab at Mission Regional Medical Center in three words:
"Fast. Precise. Rewarding."
Through preparation, technical expertise, and teamwork, professionals like Patricia Alvarado help ensure that patients facing cardiac emergencies receive timely, life-saving care when it matters most.
