University of Turku awarded sustainable commuting recognition

The Adults on the Move programme funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom have awarded the University of Turku a recognition for pioneering work in sustainable commuting for 2025.

The recognition, called Työmatkaliikkumisen edelläkulkija -tunnustus in Finnish, is awarded to an organisation that has shown particular commitment, passion and innovation in promoting sustainable commuting. According to the jury, the University of Turku has succeeded in systematically and gradually developing the conditions for sustainable commuting. The needs of a large organisation cannot be resolved all at once, but the University has been progressively making improvements.

"We are delighted for the recognition. The University's Facility Services has engaged in long-term development collaboration with the real estate owner, the City of Turku, and private operators. Awareness of sustainable commuting has also been raised as part of the University's Sustainable Campus Life initiative," says Director of Human Resources Sanna-Mari Tammilaakso.

The development of commuting will continue at the University, based on feedback collected from the University community.

Over the past four years, the University of Turku has, among other things, added frame-locking bike racks and bike shelters and improved the findability and winter maintenance of bike parking. More electric car charging points have been installed on campuses and the options for parking permits have been increased. Changing rooms with showers are available for staff, and they have been complemented with drying racks. Furthermore, there are dedicated parking and exclusion zones for electric scooters. Communications and information on commuting have also been increased.

The winner of the recognition receives a certificate and the right to use the Työmatkaliikkumisen edelläkulkija label in their communications. The recipient of the recognition also receives visibility in the official communication channels of Adults on the Move programme, the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, and Motiva's Liikkujan viikko programme.
