Connectivity

The EU invests in various projects to support sustainable connectivity with Indo-Pacific partners.

The EU promotes all dimensions of connectivity with its strategic partners in the Indo-Pacific. These collaborations are yielding tangible results, including road upgrades across Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, and a new metro line in Jakarta co-funded by the EU and Japan.

The EU is also helping partners to establish an appropriate regulatory environment and mobilising funding needed to improve connectivity on the ground between Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

Sustainable connectivity

The Global Gateway strategy feeds into the vision of the Indo-Pacific Strategy of boosting green, modern and resilient investments for sustainable connectivity, including infrastructure and regulatory frameworks.

The EU and ASEAN launched a €60 million initiative called the Sustainable Connectivity (SCOPE) TEI in December 2022. The plan will enhance sustainable transport, energy, and digital connections within the region under Global Gateway.

Furthermore, the EU invests in various projects to support development in different regions.

• In the Philippines, the EU is investing in the first national Copernicus data centre in South-East Asia with €10 million. This will enhance environmental and disaster monitoring.
• In the Seychelles and Mauritius, the EU has approved additional funding for the rehabilitation of Port Victoria, bringing its support to a total of €15 million.
• The EU joined the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor initiative, aiming to improve infrastructure for green energy, digital connectivity and transportation in September 2023.
