Just three months will bring three big changes to I-10 in northwest Tucson

It may not have seemed like an incredibly big deal when ADOT shifted a section of westbound I-10 traffic to new lanes as part of the project to rebuild and widen the freeway in the northwest Tucson area. But it signaled the start of a big transformation that will improve the daily commute of I-10 drivers by the time 2024 comes to a close.

In just three months, drivers can look forward to three major changes between Ina and Ruthrauff roads:

• The entire section of eastbound I-10 that's under construction will shift onto the freeway's new lanes.
• The remainder of westbound I-10 traffic will move onto new lanes
• The Orange Grove Road interchange will reopen to traffic

While it's too early to know precisely when each rebuilt segment will open, the changes should be relatively painless for drivers. The lane striping and other work that's required to move traffic will occur overnight so we don't restrict traffic flow during peak travel times.

Once those traffic shifts are complete, construction crews will focus on a big improvement to the connection with I-10 at Sunset Road. The project includes a partnership with Pima County to fund a Sunset Road extension to River Road, providing a new connection to the east of I-10.

The Sunset Road interchange and link to River Road will open in late 2025, when the entire project is expected to wrap up.
