CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that concrete pavement patching to repair the Ontario and Ohio Street ramps to the elevated bridges in Chicago will require a full closure over three weekends alternating between Ontario and Ohio streets. The first closure is scheduled for the weekend of June 12 on Ontario Street.
Starting at 11 p.m. Friday, June 12, Ontario Street will be fully closed between Orleans Street and the Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94). A detour will direct traffic to access the expressway via Orleans Street, Division Street and Clybourn Parkway to North Avenue (Illinois 64). Ontario Street will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Two additional weekend full closures will be required to complete the work. Details and impacts to traffic will be shared in advance, closer to the closure dates. The closures are necessary to complete a $15.4 million project to rehabilitate the structures carrying Ohio and Ontario streets over the Chicago River's North Branch, Union Pacific railroad and Kingsbury Street.
