Dr. Lance Janda, a professor of history at Cameron University, has officially been named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the institution. The action was formalized Tuesday at a meeting of CU's governing board, the Board of Regents for the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University.
Janda had been serving as acting dean of the college since last August, when he was appointed to fill a vacancy created by the departure of Dr. Jennifer Dennis.
"Dr. Janda is an exceptional professor, leader and colleague," said CU president Shane Hunt in making the announcement. "His positive impact can be seen in countless ways across Cameron and in our community. I am very excited for the great things ahead in the College of Arts and Sciences with Lance as dean."
Janda is a fixture in southwest Oklahoma, appearing regularly on KSWO-TV to discuss current and historical events. For nearly three years, his opinion pieces appeared in the Lawton Constitution, and he has given more than 100 presentations on various topics to local, regional and national groups.
Janda is the author of Stronger Than Custom: West Point and the Admission of Women, along with more than three dozen articles, encyclopedia entries and book chapters.
He earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Oklahoma in 1998 and joined the Cameron faculty a year later in 1999. Over the past 27 years, he not only taught classes, but served as Vice President for Enrollment Management, chaired the Department of Social Sciences, was coordinator for the Office of Graduate Studies, and served as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs.
He is married to Dr. Sarah Eppler Janda, also a professor at Cameron. The couple have a daughter, Sydney.
