Federal jury convicts Newport News felon of firearm and drug crimes

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A federal jury convicted a Newport News man on charges of possession of a firearm and ammunition by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine and fentanyl.

According to court records and evidence presented at trial, on Jan. 31, 2025, in Newport News, members of the Homeland Security Investigations - High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force (HSI-HIDTA) located Larry Darnell Dove Jr., 40, who was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants for eluding, assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of Schedule I or II controlled substances, two counts of felon in possession of ammunition, and other violations. As officers approached Dove, he attempted to flee, then resisted the officers as they apprehended him. During the struggle, officers removed from Dove a loaded handgun with an extended magazine.

Investigators recovered an additional loaded magazine and a box of ammunition from the vehicle Dove was using. As a previously convicted felon, Dove cannot possess firearms or ammunition.

Dove faces up to 15 years in prison when sentenced on Jan. 13, 2027. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
