PM RABUKA OPENS TWO-DAY FIJI FARMERS ECONOMIC SUMMIT 2025

Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka today emphasised the important role of farmers in the nation's economic resilience and sustainable development initiatives.
He was speaking at the opening of the two-day Fiji Farmers Economic Summit 2025 at Suva's National Gymnasium.
Under the theme "Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Agriculture," the Prime Minister underscored the need to support farmers not only with resources but with systems that build resilience, boost productivity, and enable innovation in the face of climate change and evolving global markets.
"The summit is a vital platform that brings together the heart of our nation's agricultural sector, our farmers, and the key stakeholders who support their outstanding contribution," PM Rabuka remarked.
"Today, we gather not only to discuss economic opportunities but to reaffirm our commitment, as a nation, to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 13 (Climate Action)."
Highlighting the importance of agriculture, the PM stressed that it remains the backbone of our country, and foundational pillar of Fiji's economy, society, and environment.
"It puts food on our tables, sustains livelihoods, and drives rural economies," he asserted.
At the outset, PM Rabuka acknowledged the work of the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council (FCLC) for championing farmer representation, market access, digital onboarding, and the rollout of parametric insurance and financial literacy programs.
"FCLC exists to bridge the gap between farmers and government, between science and the soil, between policy and practice," said PM Rabuka.
"It is farmer-driven and built to empower our producers from the ground up."
The Prime Minister also outlined the government strategies to transform the agriculture sector from subsistence-based to commercially vibrant-through diversification, climate resilience, digitisation, and extension support.
He also reiterated the Government's close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, the Ministry of Sugar, and other stakeholders to achieve these goals.
Hon. Rabuka concluded by urging farmers to continue utilising the land to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the progress of the agriculture sector.
"To our farmers: you are not just food producers; you are nation builders, environment stewards, and economic drivers. We value your hard work, your resilience, and your wisdom. This summit is a testament to our respect for your contribution and our collective commitment to support your aspirations."
The two-day summit is attended by farmers' associations, government officials, private sector representatives, development partners, and experts from across the agricultural spectrum.
