Georgetown, Del., Feb. 3, 2026: The Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission is welcoming a new member to its ranks.
County Council, at its Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2026, meeting, appointed David M. Pettyjohn of Millsboro to a seat on the five-member panel, a Council-appointed body that reviews and gives consideration toward subdivision applications and other land use requests. The appointment takes effect March 1, and lasts through June 30, 2026, when the current three-year term ends.
Mr. Pettyjohn, owner of an appliance sales and service business, is new to local government, but not to the community service arena. Mr. Pettyjohn has, for many years, worked as a Little Leage and youth recreation coach, as well advisory board members for a local racing club and his church. The Sussex County native said he looks forward to taking that service to the next level and being part of the conversation to chart Sussex County's future, particularly as the County begins the process to update its comprehensive plan.
County Councilman John L. Rieley nominated Mr. Pettyjohn to fill the seat currently held by J. Bruce Mears, who is retiring after serving the County in a variety of appointed capacities, including on the Commission and Board of Adjustment, since 1996.
"Dave is a homegrown, community-minded businessman who understands and loves Sussex County and its people," Councilman Rieley said. "He has a long track record of service, whether it's his customers or the community. He will be a great fit for the Commission as we take on the challenges facing Sussex County as the community grows and evolves in the years to come."
