Maine Democrats Celebrate Question 1's Defeat, Voters Defending Voting Access

Augusta, Maine - The Maine Democratic Party released the following statements celebrating a decisive defeat of Question 1 - a Republican-led voter suppression effort to restrict ballot access:

"If Republicans want to bring us these fights, we'll meet them on the field, we will go toe-to-toe - and we will win," said Devon Murphy-Anderson, Executive Director of the Maine Democratic Party. "Mainers saw through this cynical attack on their freedom to vote. They know absentee voting is trusted, secure, and part of our way of life - and they refused to let extremists take it away."

"This is what democracy looks like - neighbors talking to neighbors, communities coming together to protect what makes Maine strong," said MDP Chair Charlie Dingman. "Tonight, Mainers chose freedom over fear, access over restriction, and democracy over division. We invested in this election to win - and we did. We built real infrastructure, real trust, and real power. The same grassroots energy that defeated Question 1 will carry us to victory in 2026 and beyond."

Over the past several months, the Maine Democratic Party invested heavily in a robust statewide field program to defeat Question 1 that knocked on over 41,000 doors and made over 320,000 phone calls. With field organizers working full-time across Maine, elected officials and candidates launching canvasses and phone banks, and hundreds of volunteers chipping in their time, the MDP's work to defeat Question 1 was the largest off year program the Maine Democratic Party has ever run.

This victory is the direct result of months of organizing, training, and outreach - a statewide operation that not only delivered this win, but also laid the groundwork for success in 2026.
