Minister of Employment Matias Marttinen will attend the International Labour Conference organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva on 3−4 June 2026. He will give a speech at the plenary session on the impacts of artificial intelligence on working life. During the visit, Marttinen will meet ILO's Director-General Gilbert Houngbo, among others.
In his speech, the Minister will comment on Houngbo's report on harnessing artificial intelligence to promote decent work.
"The key message of the report is clear: the effects of artificial intelligence depend on the choices we make. While artificial intelligence may change the content of work tasks, it can also have many positive impacts. It is my hope that we can take a responsible approach to the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence," Minister of Employment Marttinen says.
Other topics on the agenda include decent work in the platform economy, social dialogue and tripartite cooperation, and advancement of gender equality at work. The conference will also address the implementation of international labour standards and the realisation of workers' rights in different countries.
Operating under the UN, the ILO is an organisation that creates international labour standards, such as conventions, and monitors and supports its Member States in complying with the conventions. The International Labour Conference is the highest decision-making body of the ILO. Each year, government representatives from ILO Member States, employers and employees convene at the Conference to discuss current employment issues and labour standards.
