Spokane City Council Passes Ordinance to Streamline Rental Registry

During Monday's City Council Legislative Session, the Council voted 5-2 to approve Ordinance C36576, which modifies Rental Registry Requirements. This change will limit the ability to increase rent or evict renters by landlords who do not have a business license or participate in the rental registry program. In addition, the ordinance will streamline the low-income unit waiver and establish the process for cause-based and periodic inspections of residential rental housing by the Office of Code Enforcement.

In February 2023, City Council passed ordinance C36330, which mandates a business license and registration for residential rental properties.

"I am grateful to the Brown Administration and Office of Code Enforcement for bringing this policy forward to update our rental registry," said Council Member Paul Dillon, District 2. "This ordinance is needed for public safety as well as setting a standard of how we want the city to look and providing dignity to residents."

The ordinance will go into effect on November 15, 2024. Residential landlords can register at www.spokanepermits.org.
