One Year Later, Rep. Sewell Returns to the Grocery Store to Highlight Trump’s Broken Promise to Lower Prices

Sewell compares prices of everyday groceries to last year, calls out Trump and Republicans for failing to deliver relief to Alabama families

Birmingham, AL - One year after highlighting the rising cost of groceries under President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell (AL-07) is back in the grocery store with a message: Alabamians are still paying the price for Trump's broken promises.

Today, Rep. Sewell released a new video from a grocery store in Alabama's 7th Congressional District comparing the prices of everyday essentials-including tomatoes, coffee, ground beef, and fresh fruits and vegetables-to what those same items cost at this time last year.

The video serves as a sequel to Rep. Sewell's August 2025 video highlighting the sharp increase in grocery prices facing Alabama families. At the time, Sewell warned that the rising cost of food was putting a growing strain on working families. One year later, she is once again taking the issue directly to the grocery aisle to show that the affordability crisis has not gone away.

"Last year, I invited my constituents to come grocery shopping with me to highlight the rising cost of everyday essentials," said Rep. Sewell. "One year later, I'm back, and the promise that President Trump made to bring prices down is still nowhere to be found."

President Trump campaigned on a promise to immediately bring down the cost of goods, saying he would "immediately bring prices down, starting on day one." Yet grocery prices remain high, and families continue to struggle with the cost of putting food on the table. The latest federal data show grocery prices were still higher than a year earlier.

Rep. Sewell has made lowering the cost of living a top priority and recently released a comprehensive report detailing the affordability crisis facing Alabama's 7th Congressional District, including rising costs for groceries, housing, utilities, gas, and health care.

She is calling on President Trump and congressional Republicans to stop making excuses, start delivering results, and work with Democrats on solutions that actually lower costs for working families.

"Hardworking Alabamians did not vote for excuses. They voted for lower prices. They deserve to know why President Trump and Republicans in Congress have failed to deliver," continued Sewell. "I will continue holding this administration accountable for its broken promises and fighting for an economy where hardworking families can afford to put food on the table, pay their bills, and build a better future."
