Himes Statement on Government Shutdown

Washington, DC - Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) released following statement regarding the government shutdown:

"At midnight, the government will officially shut down. House Republicans are on vacation. The President is posting racist deepfakes of Hakeem Jeffries. Their behavior is monumentally unserious and irresponsible, and the American people deserve better.

"Democrats have been very clear: we are ready to negotiate a bipartisan spending bill that funds the government responsibly without sacrificing the needs of our constituents. Until Republicans join us in that endeavor, the pain of this shutdown will be borne by our most vulnerable neighbors-servicemembers living paycheck to paycheck, mothers who rely on food assistance, and grandparents applying for their Social Security.

"It's time for Republicans to show up, do their jobs, and stop wasting the time and money of the people who elected them to Congress."
