Senator Markey Statement on the Legacy of President Jimmy Carter

Washington (January 9, 2025) - Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) today released the following statement on the passing former President Jimmy Carter.

"President Jimmy Carter represented the best of humanity and leaves behind an indelible legacy as a historic peacemaker, bridgebuilder, and voice of hope around the planet," said Senator Markey. "A visionary environmentalist well before his time, President Carter pushed for the expansion and protection of national parks, established the Department of Energy, was an advocate for the regulation of fossil fuels, and a renewable energy pioneer. He led the country with grace, humility, and a desire to uplift those most vulnerable among us. History will remember President Carter for his commitment to public health and improving the lives of millions around the world. We will forever be indebted to him for building a more peaceful world. Thank you, Mr. President, for being conscience, caretaker, and commander for the United States and our world."
