Intern to Hire: New IDOT Initiative

Intern to Hire: New IDOT Initiative

November 6, 2025

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is proud to announce a new initiative designed to attract, develop, and retain top civil engineering talent! The Intern to Hire program is a new innovative effort to create a pathway from college internships to full-time employment, helping students launch meaningful careers in transportation and infrastructure right here in Illinois.

As part of the program, college interns who complete at least six months - and up to five years - of internship experience with IDOT will have the opportunity to transition directly into full-time roles as civil engineer trainees upon graduation. Eligible candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from a university or college accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

With more than 1,000 civil engineers currently serving across the agency, IDOT offers new engineers the chance to make transformational contributions to infrastructure in Illinois - the transportation hub of the United States - while making a tangible difference in their own communities.

IDOT's long-standing rotation program also provides new engineers with valuable exposure to multiple areas of the profession, from design and construction to project management and materials testing, ensuring well-rounded experience and professional growth.

There are currently 63 openings for civil engineers across the state, with plans to expand the program and include additional disciplines in the future.
