ROCKFORD - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that construction on the eastbound lanes of Bypass U.S. 20 will be done on Wednesday, April 22. Work will focus on restriping the lanes near and on the bridge crossing Kishwaukee Street between the Illinois 2 (South Main Street) and Illinois 251 (11th Street) interchanges.
The bridge was reduced to one lane following damage to the bridge caused by a truck with an oversized load on April 16, and the work will revise the existing lane closure to accommodate two lanes. Work will be done from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The ramp from Illinois 2 to eastbound U.S. 20 will be closed during the work, and there will be rolling traffic closures starting from the Meridian Road interchange and ending at the Illinois 251 interchange. Once traffic is restored, this new lane configuration will be in place indefinitely until repairs can be made.
Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zone areas, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
