On Wednesday, September 24th, Minister of National Defence, Liviu-Ionuț Moșteanu, paid an official visit to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where he met with his counterpart, Yuriko Backes.
The meeting offered the two officials the opportunity to mark the 115th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Romania and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and emphasized, at the same time, that maintaining and consolidating the privileged relations between the two countries are becoming increasingly relevant.
"We particularly appreciate the close relations with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Collaboration within NATO and the European Union reflects the shared commitment to a secure, prosperous and resilient Europe," the Minister of National Defence said.
"Today, I and the Luxembourgish Minister of Defence signed a letter of intent expressing our openness for collaboration in the field of defence. We agreed to continue discussions with a view to sign a bilateral defence agreement, adapted to the changes and challenges of the security environment," Minister Moșteanu stated.
The meeting agenda also included topics related to the in-depth collaboration between the two armed forces, the participation of Luxembourgish troops in multinational exercises organized in Romania, the development of modern and sustainable capabilities, as well as political-military coordination both within NATO and the European Union. In this context, the Minister of National Defence expressed his appreciation for the solid commitments of the Luxembourg Armed Forces in maintaining a credible defence and deterrence posture on the allied eastern flank.
Minister Moșteanu emphasized our country's firm commitment and, at the same time, the consistent support offered by the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg to Ukraine. He also pointed out the strategic importance of the Black Sea for the security of the entire Alliance, as well as the need to ensure a sustained effort to support the Republic of Moldova.
At the end of the meeting, the Romanian official commended the excellent cooperation with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the significant contribution of the high-level dialogue to strengthening solidarity and cohesion between allies. Minister Moșteanu reiterated Romania's firm commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation and promoting common security objectives at European and transatlantic levels.
In the context of the same official visit, the Romanian dignitary had a meeting with Stacy Cummings, the General Manager of the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), at the institution's headquarters, where he also discussed with the Romanians working within the agency. The visit agenda also included a series of meetings with representatives of the LUXUAV, Société Européenne des Satellites and LUXGovSat Companies, with whom the minister discussed possible collaboration opportunities in the field of the defence industry.
