Freezing weather conditions can give rise to plumbing and heating issues. When temperatures drop, pipes are more susceptible to freezing. If water pipes within your home are in areas that are unheated or susceptible to drops in temperature, open cabinet doors where water pipes are located to encourage warm air to circulate around the pipe. Turning on a faucet to let water trickle will also help prevent freezing. Be sure to know where your water can be shut off in case a pipe bursts.
The La Grange Fire Department also encourages residents to heat their homes safely. The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal warns that the risk for both Carbon Monoxide poisoning and fires from home heating increases when temperatures drop. Ensure that both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning and stick to safe heating practices! View the press release to learn more.
