USM PENANG, 13 March 2026 - The arrival of a new academic semester marks not only the beginning of fresh academic pursuits but also the convergence of cultures, ideas, and aspirations.
At Universiti Sains Malaysia, the Orientation Week for International Students, Spring 2026, held from 9 to 11 March 2026, served as a vibrant introduction for students from around the world embarking on their academic journey in Malaysia.
Organised by the International Office (IO) with the support of USM Buddies, a dedicated group of student volunteers, the programme was designed to ensure that international students experience a smooth transition into life at the university while also embracing Malaysia's multicultural environment.
The Orientation Week officially commenced on 9 March 2026 with a welcoming ceremony at Kompleks Cahaya Siswa (KOMCA) here.
The event was officiated by the Director of the International Office, Professor Dr. Lee Keat Teong, alongside other officers from the International Office.
The opening day was filled with informative sessions aimed at familiarising students with the academic and cultural landscape of USM.
Students were introduced to essential information about the university, Penang, and student life through briefings conducted by the USM Buddies.
The programme also included sessions on Malaysian cultural etiquette, visa procedures, insurance matters, and the university's digital systems, ensuring that students gained a comprehensive understanding of administrative processes and academic expectations.
For many newly arrived students, these sessions played a crucial role in easing the uncertainty of studying abroad.
Yasmine, an exchange student from France, shared how the programme helped her navigate the early stages of university life.
"Orientation week helped me to know more about USM and how to register for courses, how to pay insurance, visa, and fees while my tenure at USM. It's very good for newly joined exchange students because we are a little bit disoriented and when we come here, they helped us to do everything."
Her experience reflects the broader purpose of the programme to provide international students with the guidance and support necessary to confidently begin their academic journey.
On the second day, students were introduced to the wider campus ecosystem through a guided tour led by the USM Buddies. The tour allowed students to familiarise themselves with key facilities, academic buildings, and residential areas within the university.
Several important university departments also participated in the orientation sessions, including the Security Department, the Centre for Co-Curricular Programme, and the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation, each highlighting the role they play in supporting student development and academic excellence.
Beyond academic matters, the sessions provided students with a broader understanding of the services available to them; from personal safety to extracurricular engagement and language support.
One of the highlights of the Orientation Week was the Harmony Across Horizons (HAH) programme held on 11 March 2026 at Dataran Merah, USM. The event brought together 101 exchange students from 21 countries, including Austria, South Korea, Germany, France, Indonesia, and many others.
Throughout the orientation programme, the USM Buddies played a pivotal role in guiding international students through administrative procedures such as course registration, visa documentation, medical appointments, and insurance arrangements.
Their dedication left a lasting impression on many students.
Daniel, an exchange student from Switzerland, praised the proactive and supportive approach of the Buddies.
"What really helps about the Buddies was they were extremely proactive in ensuring that everybody understood the information forwarded. It wasn't as though they just presented it and moved on. Instead, they always check to make sure that everybody followed. In my opinion, they showed great empathy and care for the students."
Such support underscores the university's commitment to creating an inclusive environment where international students feel welcomed and supported from the very beginning.
Beyond administrative briefings and campus tours, the Orientation Week emphasised the importance of community and cultural exchange.
International students were also invited to participate in Iftar (breaking of fast) at the USM Mosque, where some volunteered to serve food alongside members of the local community, an experience that allowed them to engage with Malaysian traditions and hospitality on a deeper level.
Additionally, medical check-ups and follow-up sessions at Pusat Sejahtera were organised to ensure students completed the necessary health requirements as part of their documentation process.
For many international students, Orientation Week represents more than a simple introduction to university procedures - it is the starting point of friendships, cross-cultural understanding, and transformative academic experiences.
Through initiatives such as Harmony Across Horizons and the dedicated support of the USM Buddies, Universiti Sains Malaysia continues to cultivate a campus environment where diversity is celebrated and global connections flourish.
As these students embark on their academic journey at USM, they do so not only as learners but also as ambassadors of culture, contributing to a vibrant international community that reflects the university's commitment to global engagement.
