Wittman Awarded Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from UNC Chapel Hill

WASHINGTON - Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01) was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during its 2025 spring commencement ceremony, in recognition of his nearly four decades of distinguished public service and lifelong commitment to improving the lives of Virginians and Americans across the nation. UNC Chapel Hill awards honorary degrees to individuals whose achievements reflect the university's highest values of teaching, research, and public service.

"It is a profound honor to be recognized by my alma mater, the University of North Carolina, which helped shape my career as a marine scientist and my lifelong dedication to public service," said Congressman Wittman. "My graduate studies at UNC have consistently informed and enhanced my work in Congress - especially as co-chair of the Congressional Public Health Caucus and as vice chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee. I'm grateful to UNC for helping equip me to serve my community at every level of government."

A 1990 graduate of UNC's Master of Public Health program, Congressman Wittman was recognized for his leadership in environmental conservation, veterans' healthcare, and rural broadband expansion. The university cited his work to protect the Chesapeake Bay, his successful Chesapeake Bay Accountability and Recovery Act, and his pivotal role in securing federal recognition for six Virginia Indian tribes.

Prior to joining the U.S. Congress, he served in the Virginia General Assembly, on the Westmoreland Board of Supervisors, and on the Montross Town Council. He began his career as an environmental health specialist for local health departments in Virginia and later worked for the Virginia Department of Health for 20 years, most recently as director of its Division of Shellfish Sanitation.
