The Institute will lead national efforts to commercialise emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and synthetic biology. These technologies have the potential to transform industries.

The institute is intended to have a central base in Auckland and will initially be incubated within MBIE. The base will be responsible for coordinating strategy, investment, and partnerships, while a broad network of investments will enable collaboration with universities, industry, and other public research organisations. The Institute for Advanced Technology will receive funding of just over $231 million over 4 years.

The first investment in a research platform hosted by the Paihau-Robinson Research Institute in Wellington is focused on Future Magnetic and Materials Technologies. This platform supports innovation in superconductors, magnets, and materials technologies, with applications in health, energy, and aerospace.

The Prime Minister's Science, Innovation and Technology Advisory Council will provide strategic advice on future investment areas. The institute will also integrate existing programmes such as the Technology Incubator scheme, the New Zealand Product Accelerator, and the HealthTech Activator to strengthen its delivery capability.
